Star Wars Adds LGBT Character to Cannon.

In the upcoming Star Wars Novel, Star Wars: Lords of the Sith, Author Paul S. Kemp will introduce the first LGBT character that will be part of the official cannon.

The character Moff Mors is a lesbian and is described as “an Imperial who has made some very serious mistakes but she is an incredibly capable leader and spends much of the book working hard to prevent absolute failure.”

During the Full of Sith Podcast, Lords of the Sith Editor, Shelly Shapiro discussed the character and said that “ there should be diversity in Star Wars.”

“This is certainly the first character in canon,” Shapiro says. “But there was a gay Mandalorian couple, so it’s not brand new. It’s not something I really think about, it just makes sense. There’s a lot of diversity–there should be diversity in “Star Wars.” You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there’s a lot of diversity in humans. If there’s any message at all, it’s simply that “Star Wars” is as diverse (or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real life and we don’t want to pretend it’s not. It just felt perfectly natural.”

While this is the first LGBT character in Star Wars to be cannon, the expanded universe is a different story. In the series Legacy of the Force, Author Karen Traviss included Goran Beviin and Medrit Vasur, Mandelorians who were in a same-sex marriage.

Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp will be released April 28, 2015.
